What is Osteoarthritis of the Spine?
Cartilage is a firm tissue but is softer and much more flexible than bone. When you have osteoarthritis of the spine, it means the cartilage of the joints and discs in your neck and lower back are wearing down. This can sometimes produce spurs that put pressure on the nerves leaving the spinal column, resulting in pain in the arms or legs.
Symptoms
Osteoarthritis of the spine may cause stiffness or pain in the neck or back. It may also cause weakness or numbness in the legs or arms. Some people may experience mild symptoms and have little or no interference with their daily activities. Others may experience severe pain and become disabled.
Treatment
Most treatment plans for osteoarthritis focus on controlling your pain and improving your ability to perform daily activities. Medication is used to reduce the inflammation, pain and stiffness. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to treat pain.
