Kyphosis

What is Kyphosis?

Kyphosis is the forward curvature of the spine when viewed from the side that is sometimes caused by a weakening of the spinal bones. When kyphosis is exaggerated, it can sometimes cause an abnormal rounding of the neck, upper back, lower back. Kyphosis can be present at birth or progress as one ages due to several types of conditions.

Symptoms

Usually, kyphosis alone does not cause significant problems and may not require treatment, but some severe cases of kyphosis can cause pain, a visible hump in the back, and difficultly maintaining an upright posture. Kyphosis can occur at any time but is most commonly seen in older women. In very advanced cases, kyphosis can contribute to weakness, numbness or tingling in the legs, changes in bowel or bladder habits, or difficulty breathing.

Treatment

The process for diagnosing kyphosis typically starts with an X-ray and may require advanced imaging such as an MRI or CT scan. Treatment is usually focused on the underlying cause and the symptoms a patient is experiencing. In many cases, exercises, physical therapy, bracing, and medications are sufficient to help patients. Additionally, injections may be an option to reduce pain coming from a focused part of the spine. In severe cases in which symptoms do not improve with conservative treatment options, surgery can be performed to reduce the degree of the curve, prevent progression, and alleviate pain symptoms.
