Care for Our Littlest Patients
The Connecticut Children’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Special Care Nursery (SCN) at UConn John Dempsey Hospital cares for premature newborns and those with health challenges born at the hospital.
Benefits of On-Site NICU
The NICU is just down the hall from our Labor and Delivery wing, giving parents peace of mind. Newborns can receive immediate, highly specialized medical care without having to transfer to a different hospital, keeping them close to mom as she recovers. And that care continues around the clock, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Care We Provide
The level 3 NICU at UConn John Dempsey Hospital provides care for very small or very sick newborn babies, including advanced imaging and respiratory support. The NICU is staffed by Connecticut Children’s board-certified neonatal physicians and other specialists, such as nurses, respiratory therapists, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pediatric residents who are educated in the care of newborns.
In addition to clinical care, members of our NICU team are involved in educational and research activities aimed at improving care for the tiniest and most vulnerable babies.
Parents are Equal Care Partners
Our care team understands how difficult it is for parents not to be able to take their baby home right away. In addition to providing excellent care, we offer emotional support and counseling to parents.
